ELGIN, IL (March 5, 2007) Multifilm has introduced a revolutionary new packaging film called Hi-Z
,
(pronounced “high-zee”) that is aimed at replacing expensive metallized
triplex materials without sacrificing barrier, optics or performance.
Over three years in the making, Hi-Z is a metallized sealant web that
can be laminated to a reverse printed PET or OPP. The result is a
high-gloss, high barrier material that looks and performs like a 3-ply
material, at a cost that is closer to a 2-ply material.
“We initially developed Hi-Z for the coffee industry,” explains
Multifilm president and CEO Olle Mannertorp. “Ink scuffing
and the dull appearance of a surface printed laminate for fractional
packs led us to believe that there had to be a better way to do this
without resorting to expensive 3-ply laminates.”
The challenge in developing Hi-Z was to create a material with a better
barrier than PET/ MET OPP or OPP/MET OPP laminates without a significant
cost increase. Dave Rohrschneider, operations manager at Multifilm explains:
“We created a cast modified polypropylene film with excellent metal
adhesion and a thick heat seal layer, which resulted in a high gas and
water barrier.”
Because of the excellent hot tack of the CPP and the low friction, Hi-Z
runs very well on both VFFS and HFFS machines. “Since we extrude and
metallize in-house, we were able to experiment with the formulation
until we found the perfect combination between barrier and machinability,”
says Rohrschneider. “The added stiffness also makes the material a great
replacement for stand up pouches,” adds Mannertorp.
Hi-Z is available in 1.2 mil, 1.6 mil, and 2 mil thicknesses and is
suitable for VFFS and HFFS for fractional pack coffee, snacks, dry
foods, nuts, and confections. The material is available for immediate
delivery.
Multifilm Packaging is a privately held, fully integrated flexible
packaging manufacturer focused on confection and dry foods, located in
Elgin, IL, just outside Chicago.
